S2Many site studies made in the past 20 years have shown that, in the absence of suitable stands, site quality in terms of site index can be evaluated through the interpretation of soil-site factors found to be related with tree growth. This paper reports on such a soil site study made of five important oak speciesred, scarlet, black, chestnut, and white oakon upland sites in the Ridge and Valley Region of northeastern West Virginia and western Maryland.S3.
