The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has been empowered by the Government to make tests at the public expense of plants for the low temperature carbonisation of bituminous coal. The object of these tests is to obtain accurate technical data on the quality and quantity of yields, the throughput of the plant, the working temperatures, and the general ease of working.--from prefatory note (page iii).
