A detailed description of the role of John Fryer (1839-1928), English missionary and educator, in the diffusion of western science and technology into nineteenth-century China. Fryer translated many scientific books into Chinese and compiled a six-volume collection of Chinese scientific books in 1875 and later set up the Chinese Scientific Book Depot.
