Description
Joseph Hampton (b. ca. 1695) emigrated from England and settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Canby (1697-1794), daughter of Thomas and Sarah Jarvis Canby, in 1722 at the Buckingham Monthly Meeting. Their grandson, John Hampton, was born in 1763, the son of John Hampton (1724-1775) and Ann Croasdale Hampton. He married Mary Betts, daughter of Zazhariah and Bethula Cary Betts, in 1787. They had twelve children, 1788-1814. The family lived first at Wrightstown and then Middletown, Pennsylvania. They migrated to Montgomery County, Maryland, in 1801, to Frederick County, Maryland, in 1808, to Belmont County, Ohio, in 1825, and to Morgan County, Ohio, in 1835. Mary Betts Hampton died near Pennsville, Ohio, in 1837. He died at the home of a daughter in Morgan County in 1842. Descendants listed lived in Ohio and elsewhere.
