The washing tests of coal were made to determine the possibility of so improving the quality as to render it suitable (as free as possible from ash, sulphur, and other impurities) for the production of coke use in metallurgical processes. The investigations described in this report were undertaken by the Government for the general purpose of increasing efficiency in the utilization of the fuel supply of the United States.
