An Environmental Ethic for the End of the World

An Environmental Ethic for the End of the World

by Scott C. Powell

2019 · Cambridge Scholars Publishing

Is there a place for religious texts in today’s global environmental conversation? Some have claimed over the centuries that the Bible has given humans license to devastate the world of nature. Can those same texts be a source of ecological healing? This book investigates Romans 8:19-22, Paul’s enigmatic passage about “creation groaning out in travail”, which comes at the conclusion of his long Christological discourse. His inclusion of nature in the Christ event is both unprecedented and has baffled scholars for centuries. Could Genesis provide the explanation? Four relationships shape the creation stories. Prior to the fall of Adam and Eve, human beings are said to live in harmony with God, with themselves, with one another, and with the world of nature. As humans disobey God, each of these relationships unravels, climaxing with the cursing of nature itself. Is this paradigm in the background of Paul’s Christology? Read this way, Paul’s midrash on the story of creation in light of the Christ event provides deep insight into the biblical role of humans and their instrumentality in bringing both harm and healing to the world of nature.

Christosis

Christosis

by Ben C. Blackwell

2011 · Mohr Siebeck

With increasing interaction between Eastern and Western theologians, several recent biblical interpreters have characterised Paul's soteriology as theosis, or deification. In response to these affirmations, Ben C. Blackwell explores the anthropological dimension of Paul's soteriology to determine how helpful this characterisation is. Utilising the Wirkungsgeschichte of the Pauline letters, he first examines two Greek patristic interpreters of Paul - Irenaeus and Cyril of Alexandria - to clarify what deification entails and to determine which Pauline texts they used to support their soteriological constructions. The monograph then focuses on Paul's soteriology expressed in Romans 8 and 2 Corinthians 3-5 (with excursus on other passages) and explores how believers embody Christ's death and life, his suffering and glory, through the Spirit. Blackwell concludes with a comparison of deification as presented by these two Greek patristic interpreters and Paul's soteriology, noting the substantial overlap as well as key differences.

Problems with Preterism

Problems with Preterism

by Bryan C. Hodge

2022 · Wipf and Stock Publishers

Preterism is the belief that the majority, if not all, of the eschatological passages in the New Testament have already been fulfilled in the first century. Although there are some needed correctives that preterism provides when interpreting eschatological statements in the Synoptic Gospels, the interpretive methodologies employed are largely plagued with exegetical and logical fallacies. On top of these, the genre of apocalyptic is often completely lost on the modern interpreter and as a result leads to numerous non sequiturs made when it comes to the nature and time of biblical eschatology. This book seeks to correct these hermeneutical missteps by providing exegetical principles that may help guide the reader to a more biblically sound conclusion concerning the timing and nature of biblical eschatology.
