PREFACE Education is the bedrock upon which civilizations are built, and in the Indian context it has been both a mirror of shifting paradigms and a catalyst for social transformation. From the soaring chants of the Vedas to the far-reaching aspirations of Vision 2040, our journey traverses millennia of pedagogical innovation, philosophical inquiry, institutional evolution, and policy reform. This volume, From Vedas to Vision 2040: Reimagining the Foundations of Indian Education, seeks to capture that grand sweep, offering both a retrospective appreciation of our heritage and a forward-looking blueprint for an inclusive, dynamic educational ecosystem. In Part I, we explore the spiritual and intellectual ferment of the ancient era. Chapter 1 frames our understanding: what do we truly mean by “Indian education,” beyond geographic or cultural labels? Chapters 2 and 3 illuminate the Vedic ethosits aims, values, and the intimate guru–œicya relationship that fostered inquiry, character, and community. Chapter 4 examines early institutions, their modes of finance, and governance, while Chapter 5 draws pedagogic lessons from the epic narratives of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Part II turns to heterodox traditions and the golden age of monasteries and universities. In Chapter 6, we delve into Buddhist and Jain philosophies that married renunciation with rational discourse. Chapter 7 journeys from Nalanda to Vallabhi, studying how iconic seats of learning were administered. Chapter 8 traces educational developments between empires, charting continuity and change from Post-Gupta India to the eve of colonial incursion. The colonial encounter ushered in unprecedented transformations, examined in Chapter 9 (“Macaulay to Wood”) and Chapter 10, which highlights indigenous pedagogic experiments and nationalist interventions. Part IV weaves our modern narrative: Chapter 11 revisits the Constitutional vision of rights and duties; Chapter 12 reviews the commissions, committees, and policies that shaped twentieth-century education; and Chapter 13 assesses the drive toward universalization under UEE, RMSA, and RTE 2009. Chapter 14 analyses the landmark NEP 2020, its architecture and roadmaps. Finally, Chapter 15 projects us toward 2040, addressing financing, governance, and civic engagement for a vibrant, knowledge-driven India. Throughout this book, we emphasize continuity and contestationhow ancient wisdom can inform contemporary challenges, and how modern policy must remain rooted in the pluralistic values that have long defined our land. While each chapter stands on its own, together they form an integrated narrative: one that honours our rich educational past and equips scholars, policymakers, practitioners, and citizens to co-create India’s future. It is our hope that this compendium will serve as both a scholarly reference and an inspiration: that by understanding where we have been, we can more boldly chart where we must go. E-Pedagogy for the Digital Age

Adult learners have more options for enrolling in postsecondary education than ever before, and they are able to use their learning style preference in deciding which program best meets their needs. For some of these students, those programs are fully online, and for others, there is minimal use of technology. As technology grows and become more integrated into individual lives, the unique learning styles and preferences of adults need to learn to be incorporated into instructional design. Drawing on a regional sample of US colleges, 545 adult learners in a graduate programs were surveyed about how to effectively build community in their online classes. Results indicated some agreement with these instructional tools. Mature adult learners, however, were found to have stronger agreement with strategies that included work outside of the formal online class. These results suggest perhaps a greater comfort for adults in working in spaces where there is less likelihood of being judged or graded, and that they might value relational work with other students in different ways than younger adults.
Temperate horticulture is a very important component of horticulture as it is only confined to the hilly regions of a country. For fruit crops, it represents a group, which is physiologically diverse from the sub-tropical and tropical fruit crops grown in other regions. For vegetables and floriculture it has immense potential for the keeping the nation well supplied with off-season and exotic vegetables and flowers all the year round. This book, being published to mark the centenary year of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (1905 - 2005), strives to highlight the status of temperate horticulture in India. Articles on biotechnological and bioinformatics, genetic resources and manipulation, cropping patterns, drip irrigation, hill horticulture and economics of temperate horticulture contributed by scientists from IARI, Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, NBPGR, CIPHET, CPRI and various RRS's of IARI, NBPGR and ICAR Research Complex for Eastern and NEH Regions. The book will prove as a complete handbook of temperate horticulture as it will not only serve as a reference material for research workers in horticulture, but will also play a vital role in combating problems and planning future strategies in the field of horticulture.
