Franklin D. Richards was born in 1821 at Richmond, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, son of Phinehas and Wealthy Dewey Richards. His parents and other members of the family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1836. He joined two years later and was baptized by his father. He migrated to Far West, Missouri, then Quincy, Illinois, in 1838, and to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1839. He served a number of missions for the Church and was in England when his family fled Nauvoo. The family reached Salt Lake City with a Mormon pioneer company in 1848. He married eleven times and was the father of twenty eight children. He was called as an apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ in 1849 and was president of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles at the time to his death in 1899.
