"Reverend Henry James Feltus, D.D. the first of this genealogy, was born December 25, 1775, in the county of Carlow Near the city of Dublin, Ireland ... In 1794, Mr. Feltus married Martha Ryan "youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ryan of Golden Lane, Dublin."--Page 11. They were members of the Methodist Church. The young couple, with their infant son, left their homeland and on May 23, 1795 sailed from Liverpool, England for America aboard the ship "Young Eagle". They arrived in New York on 4 July 1795 shortlly thereafter settling in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. A life of church service followed in New Jersey and New York culminating in Mr. Feltus being " ... honored with the degree of Doctor of Divinity by Union College (Schenectady, N.Y.) under the presidency of Dr. Eliphalet Nott."--Page 18. Dr. Henry James Feltus died of cholera on 24 August 1828 in New York City. His wife preceded him in death during childbirth on 15 May 1816 also in New York City. Both were buried at the old St. Stephen's Church in New York. In 1866 when the church was demolished, their remains were removed to Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York and interred in the family plot of his daughter Martha Feltus Gassner. Descendants lived in New York, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Illinois and elsewhere.
