Western theories of law have drifted steadily towards the privatizationof homicide. Capital punishment is now viewed by many as barbaric, evenfor heinous crimes, while a private act of homicide like the(increasingly routine) starvation of comatose patients is seen by manyas a caring gesture both to patient and family. This subversion oflaw is prompted by humanitarian ethics, but McAleer argues thathumanitarianism is a false friend to those committed to rule of law. Asa consequence, the problem of human vulnerability makes politicaltheology an inescapable consideration for law. Drawing upon ThomasAquinas and Francisco de Vitoria, Graham J. McAleer asserts that onlypublic authority has the right to intentionally kill. Readers will findmuch to reflect upon in this book, which is timely in our twenty-firstcentury. From start to finish, McAleer presents a sustained argument, ahistory of moral ideas, and and a close reading of a grim subject thatis persuasive and compelling.

Her reckless defiance leads her into unexpected danger. With the firm’s enemies closing in, will Thom and Avery’s skill and courage prove sufficient to keep their friends safe? Author note: Thom was previously published as Always Daddy’s Girl. It has been reformatted but no new material has been added.
