The World the Game Theorists Made

The World the Game Theorists Made

by Paul Erickson

2015 · University of Chicago Press

Today, game theory is central to our understanding of capitalist markets, the evolution of social behavior in animals, and much more. Both the social and biological sciences have seemingly fused around the game. Yet the ascendancy of game theory and theories of rational choice more generally remains a rich source of misunderstanding. To gain a better grasp of the widespread dispersion of game theory and the mathematics of rational choice, Paul Erickson uncovers its history during the poorly understood period between the publication of John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern s seminal "Theory of Games and Economic Behavior" in 1944 and the theory s revival in economics in the 1980s. "The World the Game Theorists Made "reveals how the mathematics of rational choice was a common, flexible language that could facilitate wide-ranging debate on some of the great issues of the time. Because it so actively persists in the sciences and public life, assessing the significance of game theory for the postwar sciences is especially critical now."

I am not Frazzle!

by Darren Worrow, Maria Miller, Richelle Goodrich, Nancy Brooks, Holly Kothe, Cecily Magnon, Dave Derby, Graham Downs, Paul Howard

2013 · Lulu.com

Here is the deal, we take 10 great authors, give them the freedom to write a story in their own style and genre as long as the general theme has children involved. Next we put them in a big pot (the stories not the authors) and mix them up a bit to see what comes out at the end. And here it is, a marvellous mixture of inspiring, entertaining, funny and thought provoking fables that will delight every grown up from here to the Land of Lorff ... Huh? What do you mean you've never heard of the land of Loff? Well my friend, read on..... Authors include: Darren Worrow, Maria Miller, James Cruickshank and James Penhaligon, Richelle E. Goodrich, Cecily Magnon, Holly M. Kothe, Nancy Brooks, Paul Howard, Graham Downs and David Darby. All proceeds of this book will go to the children's charity; The Devizes and District Opportunity Centre.

Vascular Plants of Texas

Vascular Plants of Texas

by Stanley D. Jones, Joseph K. Wipff, Paul M. Montgomery

2014 · University of Texas Press

Everyone with a professional interest in the flora of Texas will welcome this checklist of the vascular plants. This comprehensive list also includes crops, persistent perennials, and naturalized plants and encompasses over 1,000 changes to the previous (Hatch, 1990) checklist. The authors have arranged this checklist phylogenetically by classes following the Cronquist system. Several features make this checklist especially useful. Chief among them is the relative synonymy (name history). An extensive index makes current classification and correct nomenclature readily accessible, while the botanical bibliography is the most extensive ever compiled for Texas. The authors also note which plants have been listed as threatened or endangered by the Texas Organization of Endangered Species, which are designated as Federal Noxious Weeds, and which have been chosen as state tree, flower, fruit, etc. by the Texas Legislature.

Boundary Layer Parameterization for a Global Spectral Model

Boundary Layer Parameterization for a Global Spectral Model

by Larry Mahrt, Hua-Lu Pan, Paul H. Ruscher, C.-T. Chu

1987

Much of the work has concentrated on interactions between the soil model and the model of the atmospheric boundary layer and the behavior of the boundary-layer package within the Air Force Global Spectral Model. Such studies have underscored the importance of the formulation of surface properties and transport within the underlying soil. Work during the contract period also focussed on elimination of several inadequacies of boundary-layer modelling. The inclusion of the statistical impact of subgrid variations of surface properties leads to a surface exchange coefficient which varies more smoothly with stability and does not decrease as rapidly with very stable conditions. Such modifications reduce the nocturnal cooling which is usually overestimated in boundary-layer models. Other improvements of the boundary-layer model in stable conditions have resulted from increasing the critical Richardson number in the boundary-layer depth formulation and adopting the Kondo formulation for the eddy diffusivity. The development of a formulation for boundary-layer cumulus has allowed inclusion of cloud-induced drying. Although this formulation leads to significant improvement of the boundary-layer predictions in cloudy situations, the general problem is far from solved. Keywords: Atmospheric boundary layer; Surface energy balance; Soil model; Stable layer parameterization; Surface fluxes. (jhd).
