The Journal of Sir Walter Scott

The Journal of Sir Walter Scott

by Walter Scott

2010 · Canongate Books

This edition of the great Scottish author's personal journal is "truly a classic . . . compelling right to the very last unfinished sentence" ( Scotland on Sunday, UK). The celebrated 18th and 19th century Scottish author of such classics as Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, and The Lady of the Lake delivers what many regard as his greatest work: a day-to-day account of the last six years of his life as he navigates financial ruin, bereavement, and increasing ill health. Laboring to pay off debts of more than £120,000, Scott emerges, not simply as a great writer, but as an almost heroic figure whose generosity and even temper shine through at all times. This edition of Scott's journals presents a complete edited text and notes drawing on a wealth of other material including correspondence, reminiscences and the memoirs of Scott's contemporaries. It remains one of the standards by which Scott scholarship is judged. "Scott's Journal is a hugely important piece of Scottish, and indeed European literature, published here with an incisive introduction, brilliantly judicious annotation and appendices and an excellent index . . . Walter Scott has never been so readable." — The Herald, UK

Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory

Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory

by Scott Appelrouth, Laura Desfor Edles

2008 · Pine Forge Press

A unique hybrid of text and readings, this book combines the major writings of sociology′s core classical and contemporary theorists with an historical as well as theoretical framework for understanding them. Laura Desfor Edles and Scott A Appelrouth provide not just a biographical and theoretical summary of each theorist/reading, but an overarching scaffolding which students can use to examine, compare and contrast each theorists′ major themes and concepts. No other theory text combines such student-friendly explanation and analysis with original theoretical works. Key features include: * Pedagogical devices and visual aids - charts, figures and photographs - to help summarize key concepts, illuminate complex ideas and provoke student interest * Chapters on well-known figures, such as Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Parsons and Foucault as well as an in-depth discussion of lesser known voices, such as Charlotte Perkins-Gilman, WEB Du Bois, and Leslie Sklair * Photos of not only the theorists, but of the historical milieu from which the theories arose as well as a glossary at the back

Researching Education

Researching Education

by David Scott, Robin Usher

2010 · Bloomsbury Publishing

This volume is a study of the theory and practice of researching education. It examines the philosophical, historical, political and social contexts of researching and the implications of these for the collection and analysis of data. The authors argue that power is ever present in the construction of research texts and this is inevitable, as research imposes a closure of the world through representation and thus is always involved with and implicated in the operation of power. The book addresses such fundamental questions as: What is legitimate knowledge?, What is the relationship between the collection and analysis of data? and How does the researcher's presence in the field affect his or her data?. Divided into three sections, the book reviews the philosophy of research; the strategies and methods of research; and the issues involved in research. The authors present the reader with a balance of theory and practice, providing case studies, examples and tables to support and illustrate their arguments.

Conduct Unbecoming

Conduct Unbecoming

by Scott Baron, James Wise, Jr.

2016 · McFarland

Men and women who serve in the armed forces are subject to a different legal code than those they protect. Throughout American history, some have--through action or failure to act or by circumstances--found themselves facing prosecution by the United States military. One measure of a nation's sense of justice is how it treats those who surrender some of their rights to defend the rights of fellow citizens. Beginning with the first court-martial (predating the nation itself) and continuing to the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the War on Terror, this book examines the proceedings of 15 courts-martial that raised such important legal questions as: When does advocacy become treason? Who bears ultimate responsibility when troops act illegally? What are the limits in protesting injustice? The defendants include such familiar names as Paul Revere and William Calley. The authors examine such overlooked cases as the Somers Mutiny, the trial of the San Patricios and the Port Chicago Mutiny. These trials demonstrate that guaranteeing military justice--especially in the midst of armed conflict--is both a challenge and a necessity in a free society.
