Neonatal Formulary

Neonatal Formulary

by Sean Ainsworth

2020 · Oxford University Press

Neonatal Formulary provides comprehensive guidance on the safe use of the drugs prescribed during pregnancy and commonly given to babies during labour and delivery, as well as during lactation and the first year of life. Treating the journey from pregnancy to parenthood as a continuous event, the new edition contains updated information on how the drugs affect both mother and baby. The first part of the book focuses on drug storage, drug licensing, and drug prescribing. In addition, it explains to why the metabolism of drugs differs in premature and sick infants, and why the practice of extrapolating doses from adult studies is unsafe. Patient safety, excipients, and therapies that affect drugs are also covered. Part 2 consists of monographs for over 250 drugs that may find use in the neonatal unit, and possibly outside it. Each monograph is divided into sections covering use, pharmacology, treatment, drug interactions or other administration, information, supply and administration, and references. The monographs are evidence-based and include links to the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and national guidelines. The third part presents information on additional drugs, and groups of drugs, that are often taken by mothers during pregnancy, labour, or during breast feeding. The drugs discussed in this section all affect the foetus or infant. Containing far more detail than is available in the British National Formulary for Children, and with additional online material featuring updates related to specific drugs and dosing, Neonatal Formulary is an essential guide for neonatologists, neonatal nurses, hospital pharmacists, obstetric staff, advanced nurse practitioners and for all health care professionals caring for pregnant women and their infants in the first year of life.

Lasers in Dermatology

Lasers in Dermatology

by Sean W. Lanigan

2012 · Springer Science & Business Media

Over the past decade there has been a huge increase in interest in the use of lasers in dermatology. The number and choice of lasers have increased dramatically. This has expanded the number of conditions treatable by lasers and also the number of clinicians now wishing to include dermatological lasers in their therapeutic armamentarium. Marketing forces and commercial pressures have led to a situation where lasers are purchased and used without a broad-based understanding of this important and developing field. The aim of this textbook is to provide a comprehensive guide to the theoretical and practical aspects of lasers used in the fields of dermatology and plastic surgery. I would hope this book would allow the trainee, consultant dermato logist or plastic surgeon to gain a full understanding of all aspects of lasers in der matology, both from the basic science and safety aspects through to the most appropriate choice of laser for the treatment of most particular conditions. This, however, is not a "how to ... cook book"; guidance only on treatment is pro vided based on my own experience and published research. Full understanding of the "whys" and "whens" of treatment are the aim, coupled with an extensive review of current and "cutting edge" research. This textbook will be an ideal complement to practical hands-on laser training to provide the clinician with all that is necessary for safe and competent practice in this field. vii ·"~i·:r..; Acknowledgements .,~.

Neonatal Formulary is a unique publication that provides comprehensive guidance on the safe use of all the drugs prescribed during pregnancy and commonly given to babies during labour, delivery, and the first year of life. This new edition provides improved and detailed coverage of the many drugs that are given to women during pregnancy and during lactation where the baby's welfare must be borne in mind as well as that of the mother.
